Our crush of the year, 1st semester? Well we have two. Yes. 

Dr. José Xavier : Membro Honorário do BAS, um tributo. We are the students helped by our teacher of Languages & Literature who started to learn about polar education and created this blog, Geração Polar. 

 We were prepared to talk with Dr José Xavier at our school. Unfortunately the school was closed by a strike and we couldn't meet the polar scientist who gently accepted the invitation of our teacher Prof. Gsouto.

Dia da Terra 2016 : Tributo à esquiadora Estelle Balet

Faltam um dia para celebrar o Dia Mundial da Terra. Dia 22 Abril 2016.
Todos os anos, desde 1970, a 22 de Abril celebra-se o Dia Mundial da Terra. Em 2013, Geração Polar aderiu ao Dia da Terra, mas o nosso blog Geração Verde sempre esteve actuante desde Dia da Terra 2008, ano em que começamos a nosso projecto Blogs na educação.

Google não esqueceria de celebrar a o planeta Terra, e mais uma vez nos surpreende com o Google Doodle que destaca os cinco principais biomas da Terra: tundra, florestas, pastagens, deserto, e recifes de corais. Obviamente, escolhi a tundra.
O objectivo principal do Dia da Terra é consciencializar os habitantes do planeta Terra para a importância e necessidade da conservação dos recursos naturais do mundo.

Hoje, o Dia da Terra é celebrado em mais de 190 países, com a participação de cerca de 1 bilhião de pessoas.

 A beleza dos pólos e o alerta também está no vídeo da Nature Conservation International I am ice, narrado pelo actor Liam Neeson:
Mas, neste Dia da Terra 2016 queremos prestar tributo a Estelle Balet, vítima das alterações climáticas que teimamos em não compreender.

 É com muita tristeza que soubemos da morte de mais uma esquiadora de alto risco, provocada por uma avalanche.
Assim, no Dia da Terra, dedicamos o nosso post à campeã mundial de snowboard extreme, a suíça Estelle Balet, de 21 anos, que morreu ontem, terça-feira, 19 Abril 2016, após ter sido atingida por uma avalanche nos Alpes Suíços.

O acidente que vitimou a snowboarder ocorreu durante a gravação de um vídeo próximo de Orsières, no sul da Suíça.
Segundo a imprensa helvética, que cita fontes da polícia de Valais, Balet, que estava a usar equipamento de segurança, descia a grande velocidade quando foi atingida pela avalanche, tendo morrido no local, apesar de imediatamente socorrida.



 


Balet, que cresceu na região onde se deu o incidente, sagrou-se campeã do Mundo em 2015 e 2016, após vencer o Freeride World Tour.
Infelizmente, avalanches são a causa das alterações ambientais, um dos principais objectivos da consciencialização do Dia da Terra.
Nos últimos anos, foram várias as mortes trágicas provocadas por avalanches em várias regiões do mundo.

And now a beautiful video published by NASA on the 19 April 2016. NASA monitors Earth's vital signs from land, air and space with a fleet of satellites and ambitious airborne and ground-based observation campaigns. 








The International Space Station hosts a variety of payloads and experiments supporting climate research, weather predictions, hurricane monitoring, pollution.

However this post of Earth Day is our tribute to the young snowboarding champion Estelle Balet another victim of climate change.

Swiss snowboarding champion Estelle Balet who was killed in an avalanche on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, after a slab of snow broke away during a film shoot in Switzerland and swept her down a narrow, rocky slope.

"It is with heavy hearts that we report Estelle Balet, 21, reigning Freeride World Tour Champion was caught in an avalanche and killed early Tuesday morning while filming in the backcountry of Le Portale, located above the Swiss resort of Orsières in Mont Blanc massif."
Balet was the second rider to drop into a ravine when an avalanche broke above her and swept her more than 3,000 feet down the terrain. Valais state police said in a statement that rescuers were able to free Balet, who had been wearing special safety equipment, but she died at the scene.
Police say the 21-year-old Swiss athlete was struck early on Tuesday morning while filming above Orsieres, near Switzerland’s southern border with France and Italy. She had been following another snowboarder, who wasn’t caught in the avalanche.

 



Balet recently won the Freeride World Tour. She was a member of watchmaker Swatch’s professional team.

Freeride snowboarding takes place away from prepared routes and athletes are often at more risk of being caught in avalanches due to riding off piste.
One of the last photos posted by Estelle last week on her Instagram with the comment:
“Leave me here for a while… Another good day in the sun with legends.👸 #myhappyplace #luckiestgirlintheworld”
Unfortunately, avalanches are the cause of climate change, one of the main objectives of the Earth Day awareness.
In recent years, there were several tragic victims caused by avalanches in different world countries.
