COP2015 Paris : Povos indígenas, pela defesa da Terra

Representantes dos povos indígenas juntaram-se num passeio de barco no rio Sena, em Paris, à margem da Conferência sobre o Clima COP2015 e pediram medidas para proteger o meio ambiente.

Os grupos da América do Norte e Central, Amazónia, Indonésia e República Democrática do Congo reclamam um pacto para salvar o planeta.

“Estamos neste barco para assinar um pacto entre todos os povos indígenas. Queremos proteger a Mãe Natureza e salvar os nossos filhos, a nossa terra”, disse Candido, um chefe tribal do Panamá.

Delegados de 195 países participam na conferência que pretende garantir um acordo global, obrigatório para limitar as emissões de carbono e o aquecimento global.

A cinco dias do prazo final para um grande acordo multilateral que deverá garantir que a temperatura média da Terra não se eleve mais de 2ºC até 2100, muito resta a fazer para pôr em em sintonia os países mais desenvolvidos – Estados Unidos, Canadá, Austrália e Japão, mais Europa – e as nações do chamado G-77+China – o grupo formado por grandes emergentes e países em desenvolvimento.

Indigenous groups from across the world staged a paddle down the Seine river in Paris on Sunday, the 6 December 2015, calling on governments to ensure Indigenous rights are included in the United Nations climate pact currently being negotiated in France.

The United States, the EU, Australia and other states have pushed for Indigenous rights to be dropped from the binding parts of the agreement out of fear that it could create legal liabilities.

Indigenous representatives from North and South America, Indonesia and Congo played instruments and led others in prayer after activists completed the paddle, demanding the protection of water and the environment.

“At the moment the rights of Indigenous Peoples all over the globe are being violated by ‘green climate projects’ – such as hydropower dams – in the name of ‘climate mitigation’. If such violations are happening now, imagine what will come with a legally binding document, where the rights of Indigenous Peoples are not guaranteed,” said Eriel Deranger, member of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation in Canada.
